Learn countries in French with the Animaniacs

Admittedly, quoting the Animaniacs dates me a little. But come on, do you know a better way to learn countries?

For our Gen Z readers, you’re about to discover a gem… and an earworm! So here comes “Le monde par Yako”. You’ll thank me later!

Learn European countries (+ Australia) with Eurovision

If you’re reading this article from America, you might have discovered the joys of the ESC with the American movie Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga.

And if not, here are a few facts about this cult European event.

  • The Eurovision Song Contest is a yearly music contest bringing together artists from all over Europe.
  • There are two semi-finals, followed by the grand finale. 20 countries qualify from the semi-finals and 6 qualify automatically, including the previous year’s winner and the “Big Five”, the main financial contributors.
  • The winner is the country that receives the most points from all the other countries (audience and jury).
  • Songs can be of any style, very often with impactful messages or just completely extravagant. The same goes for the costumes! It’s as much about the fun as the music.
  • The ESC is the most challenging television broadcasting event, being broadcasted live all over the world since 1956.

And Australia? Well, they joined the contest recently, and I know what you’re thinking: not exactly in Europe, right?

Anyway, revenons à nos moutons (australiens). Eurovision is a fantastic way to learn countries in French, since the official languages are English and French. You can even pinpoint them on a map or globe. Because not everyone knows where Montenegro or San Marino is. And if you do, douze points to you!

Open your world

The world is your oyster — by the way, don’t try to literally translate this in French, although it could be fun. So learn some languages, pack your bags and go explore!

“Le monde est un livre et ceux qui ne voyagent pas n’en lisent qu’une page”.

“The world is a book, and those who do not travel only read one page.”

– Saint Augustin
